A TOWNSVILLE spinal surgeon specialising in replacing damaged discs with prosthetics has been asked to chair an international organisation.

Dr Richard Emery, a Mater Hospital surgeon, has been appointed education chairman of AO Spine Asia-Pacific – the peak international community of surgeons, academics and researchers in spinal care.

The Spine Specialist Solutions private practice owner regularly has international visitors come to watch him operate and yesterday a surgeon from Belgium, Dr Giovanni Alessi, watched him do an anterior spinal surgery.

Dr Emery does about 270 spinal surgeries per year.

“This (anterior) surgery is often the last resort for patients suffering serious back pain or injury, who are in some cases wheelchair bound and in constant discomfort from damaged or degenerative intervertebral discs,” Dr Emery said.

During the procedure, general surgeon Dr Jason Boldery operates through the patient’s abdomen, moving aside vital organs to make way for Dr Emery to remove the damaged disc and put in a prosthesis.

“It can be life changing for patients who have sometimes been condemned to a wheelchair due their back injury or degeneration – they are able to stand up, walk again and live their lives in relative comfort,” Dr Emery said.

Dr Emery hopes to expand his expertise with plans to start performing spinal surgeries using minimally invasive techniques.
